Cette terre noire contient un fort pourcentage d'humus, 3 à 15 %, ainsi que de potasse, de phosphore et de divers oligo-éléments. Ce type de sol est généralement épais (souvent plus de 1 m et jusqu'à 6 m en Ukraine). Il est très fertile et son fort taux d'humus et d'argile lui confère une réserve en eau importante.
