The Bathonian Stage takes its name from Bath, a spa town in England built on Jurassic limestone (the Latinized form of the town name is Bathonium). The base of the Bathonian is at the first appearance of ammonite species Parkinsonia (Gonolkites) convergens in the stratigraphic column. The global reference profile for the base of the Bathonian (GSSP) was ratified as Ravin du Bès, Bas-Auran area, Alpes de Haute Provence, France in 2009. The top of the Bathonian (the base of the Callovian Stage) is at the first appearance of ammonite genus Kepplerites. L'étage Bathonien a été défini près de la ville de Bath dans comté de Somerset, au sud-ouest de l'Angleterre à 180 km à l'ouest de Londres. D'un point de vue biostratigraphique, la base de l'étage Bathonien est caractérisée par l'apparition des espèces d'ammonites Gonolkites convergens et Morphoceras parvum. Le Point Stratotypique Mondial (PSM) déterminant la base de l'étage a été sélectionné en France dans les Alpes-de-Haute-Provence en région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
