Définition

  • Pyrolysis, or thermolysis, is the chemical decomposition of an organic compound by significantly raising its temperature to obtain other products (gases and matter) that it did not contain. The operation is carried out in the absence of oxygen, or in a low-oxygen atmosphere to avoid oxidation and combustion (i.e. no flame is produced). This is the first stage of thermal transformation after dehydration. It generally produces a carbonaceous solid, an oil and a gas. It begins at a relatively low temperature level (from 200°C) and continues up to around 1,000°C. Depending on the temperature, the proportion of the three resulting compounds differs.
