lithostratigraphy

Définition

  • Lithostratigraphy is a stratigraphic approach involving the study of sedimentary piles from a geometric, lithological and petrographic point of view. Lithostratigraphy defines lithostratigraphic units based on the recognition of facies and discontinuities, in accordance with Walther's law (the vertical succession of facies reflects the lateral migration of palaeoenvironments). However, the units characterised in this way are rarely synchronous with the biostratigraphic division and therefore with the time lines of the stages. As a result, lithostratigraphy is essentially a tool for regional correlation, which is very useful for pinpointing the dynamic evolution of palaeoenvironments.
