Definición
- Periglacial (etymologically "near the glaciers") is a word that originally characterized the regions adjacent to glacier-covered areas, and therefore subject to a cold climate with long, heavy winter frosts and summer thaws. The term was later extended to cover all geomorphological processes associated with alternating freezing and thawing of water in soils, surface formations and rocks. Periglacial regions were not necessarily glaciated. Although mainly associated with permafrost, periglacial dynamics can also develop in a context of seasonal frost. The word periglacial has a different meaning from that of a neighbouring word with the same etymological origin: paraglacial.
