silica

Definición

  • Silica is the natural form of silicon dioxide (SiO2), which is a constituent of many minerals. Silica exists in the free state in various crystalline or amorphous forms, and combined with other oxides (Al2O3, FeO, MgO, CaO, Na2O, K2O, etc.) in silicates. Silicates are the main constituents of the Earth's mantle and crust. Free silica is also very abundant in nature, in the form of quartz, chalcedony and diatomaceous earth. Silica accounts for 60.6% of the mass of the Earth's continental crust8. After oxygen, silicon is the most abundant element in the lithosphere (27% by mass).
