Definition
- A taxon is a group of one or more populations of an organism or organisms seen by taxonomists to form a unit. The species is the basic taxon of the systematic classification. The higher the rank of the taxon, the lower the degree of similarity of the individuals concerned, i.e. the lower the number of characters that plants, animals, fungi, bacteria or chroma have in common, and vice versa.
