- Propriété de certains types de minéraux argileux (et donc de matériaux ou d'horizons constitués majoritairement par ces minéraux) de gonfler fortement par adsorption d'eau entre les feuillets, mais aussi par emprisonnement dans une sorte de réseau spongieux (jusqu'à dix fois leur poids d'eau).
