  • In the experiment conducted by Paterson & Mulligan (2012, Experiment 1), participants are asked to memorize target words from six different semantic categories (animal, fruit, kitchen utensil, metal, part of the human body, and transportation vehicle). Each word is associated with a cue with which it rhymes (for example, Force-Horse). In the repetition condition, the subjects first memorize the word pairs presented so that no target words of the same category follow each other. Then the subjects have a second opportunity to memorize the list of word pairs in which the target words are now grouped by semantic category. They must then freely recall the target words. In the presentation condition without repetition, participants are asked to memorize the list of word pairs in which the target words are grouped by semantic category before the free recall test. The results show that the performance of the free recall in the repeated item condition is reduced compared to the presentation condition without repetition, as well as the semantic clustering found in the recall of the target words, measured by the ARC score.
