- Despite increased public awareness of the vital role that food choices, dietary practices, and physical activity have on health, diet behaviors of most Americans are not consistent with the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Most Americans, young and old, eat too few fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or lowfat milk products, while consuming too much fat, sweetened beverages, and sodium.
