Définition
- The current system of corrections in the United States emerged in the 20th century as an institution designed to incarcerate offenders, deter offenders from future crimes, and transform offenders into law-abiding citizens. However, for much of European-American history, punishment was the sole means of corrections, and little or no attention was given to the idea of deterrence or rehabilitation.
