Epitomized by The Simpsons tree house, built by fathers as part of their care for their children, and marking out children's space in the home, the backyard suburban tree house has become an icon of modern American childhood. The tree house has associations with nature and rural play, and represents the kind of free play encouraged after World War II. At that point the tree house became, and remains, a popular motif in children's literature and the media, however as informal impermanent structures, actual historical examples remain few and far between.
