- Polygamy intended as plural marriage or polygyny, that is, a marriage in which the man has more than one wife at the same time, has been a widespread practice throughout history, including in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Bigamy is the criminal act of marrying another person when one is still married to someone else in countries with laws against multiple marriage.
