- Carotenoids are naturally occurring pigments that are found in plants and other photosynthetic organisms such as algae and some bacteria. Approximately 600 carotenoids have been identified, 50 of which are consumed by humans. [Source: Encyclopedia of Global Health; Carotenoid]
