- Theory and research regarding the relationship between self-control and crime is attributed mostly to the work of Michael Gottfredson and Travis Hirschi. Self-control theory is a general theory of crime that posits that the locus of criminal tendency is found within the individual rather than in social-structural forces or the environment.
