  • A NEUROSCIENTIST SPECIALIZING in nuclear medicine, Michael E. Phelps was the joint winner, with David E. Kuhl, of the Charles F. Kettering Prize of the General Motors Cancer Foundation in 2001 for “research in the development of positron emission tomography (PET) scanning and the use of this technology to study normal and abnormal cellular function.” Michael Edward Phelps was born on August 24, 1939, in Cleveland, Ohio, and gained his B.S. in chemistry and B.S. in mathematics at Western Washington University in 1965 and his doctorate in chemistry at Washington University in 1970. In 1971, Phelps was appointed assistant professor of radiation science at the School of Medicine at Washington University, later being promoted to associate professor.
