- From the arrival of Hernán Cortés in Mexico in 1519 to 1821 when Mexico won independence from colonial rule, Spain actively sought to Christianize and “Castilianize” native populations. The Spanish sought to expand the Spanish empire and culture, including their language, to the farthest reaches of the New World.
