- Approximately 20% of school-age children have a chronic illness, making counseling increasingly important due to the impact on the child's family relationships, school functioning, and peer interactions. Certain chronic illnesses have a greater effect than others on the psychosocial and educational aspects of a child's life, depending on symptom severity and the nature of the treatment.
