- The landmark Supreme Court decision United States v. Nixon strengthened the powers of the presidency at the same time that it contributed to the resignation of a president. The ruling, issued on July 24, 1974, affirmed for the first time the constitutional right of presidents to keep secret certain communications they have with advisers, a right known as executive privilege.
