  • a phrase that conveys the intent to have convicted offenders serve the amount of jail or prison time to which they were sentenced. Truth in sentencing as a philosophy, expressed in numerous state laws enacted in the latter part of the 20th century, was a punitive response to the perception of victims and others that offenders were serving too little of the sentences given in court.
