- Organization established in 1896 to improve the lives of African American women and address issues of concern and importance to the black community. At a convention held in Washington, D.C., in 1896, two black women's organizations that arose out of the women's club movement—the National Federation of Afro-American Women and the National League of Colored Women—merged to form the National Association of Colored Women (NACW).
