  • Henry Barnard is generally credited with originating teacher institutes when he assembled 26 young men and taught them for a period of 6 weeks in the late 1830s in Hartford, Connecticut. The curriculum consisted of extending their knowledge of the subjects taught in schools and the best methods of school arrangements, instruction, and government.
