- Approximately 9 million U.S. children over the age of 6 are now considered overweight, and the numbers are on the rise. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) state that the percentage of overweight young people in the United States has roughly tripled since 1980 to about 18 percent.
