  • Intensive mothering is the normative or ideal mothering ideology in affluent Western countries, especially in the United States. According to sociologist Sharon Hays, who coined the phrase intensive mothering in her landmark book The Cultural Contradictions of Motherhood, intensive mothering is the current ideology of—or pattern of beliefs and values for what counts as—“good mothering” today.
