activo/passivo sex roles

Definition

  • Activo/passivo sex roles, or active/passive sex roles, describes a gender-stratified form of male homosexual behavior common throughout Latin America. Rooted in expectations of appropriate gender behavior for males and females in general, the activo/passivo model of homosexuality defines one's sexuality according to the gender demeanor of participants in homosexual sex, which is understood as complementary to and coinciding with the sexual role taken.
