risk behaviors: tobacco

Definition

  • Tobacco refers to the dried tobacco leaves of the tobacco plant, which contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance and a carcinogen. Tobacco may be smoked via cigarettes (shredded tobacco wrapped in paper), cigars (rolled bundles of tobacco) or cigarillos (more slender versions of cigars), pipes (metal, clay, or wood instruments in which chopped tobacco is ignited and the smoke inhaled), or electronic cigarettes (devices that produce a vapor containing nicotine, intended to reduce risks of tobacco use).
