Preferred term

regolith

Definition

  • Regolith is a layer of loose material, including soil, subsoil, and broken rock, that covers bedrock. On the Moon and many other bodies in the Solar System, it consists mostly of debris produced by meteorite impacts and blankets most of the surface. If the layer is very deep (perhaps a kilometer of more) it is known as megaregolith. (Encyclopedia of Science, by David Darling, https://www.daviddarling.info/encyclopedia/R/regolith.html)
