- Le gaz d'hydrogène atomique non ionisé qui constitue une composante importante du milieu interstellaire, représentant peut-être la moitié de sa masse, même si sa densité est très faible. Sa raie d'émission radio à 21 centimètres a permis de cartographier la distribution de l'hydrogène neutre dans les bras spiraux de notre propre Galaxie et d'autres galaxies voisines.
