Définition

  • The structural changes in the number, mass, size and/or composition of the airway tissues. Small airway (e.g., BRONCHIOLES) remodeling due to smoking, inhaled irritants, etc. The structural changes seen in the asthmatic airways, including increased SMOOTH MUSCLE mass, deposition of EXTRACELLULAR MATRIX components, and thickening of the epithelial reticular BASEMENT MEMBRANE. Asthmatic airway remodeling is often associated with airway function decline (e.g., airflow limitation, persistent airway hyper-responsiveness, and allergic airway inflammation).
