  • Animals that have been trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The task(s) performed by the animal must be directly related to the person's disability. Emotional support, therapy, comfort, or companion animals are not considered service animals under the Americans With Disabilities Act.(www.ada.gov/regs2010/service_animal_qa.html, accessed 3/31/2020) Dogs trained to serve as guides for blind or visually impaired persons. A service dog trained to alert a person to an oncoming health event. Alert dogs can warn a diabetic of an oncoming hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic event, or may demonstrate specific warning or assisting behavior before, during or immediately after a person's seizure. A dog that has been trained to alert a person who has a significant hearing loss or is deaf when a sound occurs, such as a knock on the door.
