Definition
- A species of CARDIOVIRUS which contains three strains: Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus, Vilyuisk human encephalomyelitis virus, and Rat encephalomyelitis virus. A strain of THEILOVIRUS that can be divided into two biological subgroups which both infect mice. One causes an acute and fatal polioencephalomyelitis and the other causes a chronic persistent demyelinating infection of the white matter. (7th ICTV Report, p668-9)
