  • NICOL, D.M., "The Confessions of a bogus Patriarch: Paul Tagaris Palaiologos, Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem and Catholic Patriarch of Constantinople in the fourteenth century" in JOURNAL OF ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY, 21/4 (Oct 1970), 289-299 Ordained as an orthodox priest in Antioch and later appointed bishop of Taurezion in 1375. Falsely called himself patriarch of Jerusalem, and arrested for immoral behavior. Went to Rome to seek the pope's blessing, claiming to be orthodox patriarch of Jerusalem. Appointed by the pope as Latin patriarch of Constantinople in 1380. Later denounced as an imposter and imprisoned, then welcomed back, then reinvestigated. Fled back to Constantinople and made confession in 1394, asking to be readmitted to the orthodox church (final decision lost). May have died shortly thereafter.
