- Patterned beds using dwarf or creeping foliage plants which could be trained into a surface as uniform as a carpet; early examples used geometrical patterns; in the late 19th c., zoomorphic and emblematic shapes became popular [Ox Comp Gardens]; Beds of foliage plants arranged in patterns similar to those on carpets; popular mid-late 19th c., especially in England and the USA [AAT]
