- Branch of philosophy that studies perceptible beauty in art and nature, together with the intellectual and emotional responses to beauty. [AAT]; use for Middle Ages and from 18th c. onwards; prefer Art theory (q.v.) for Renaissance and Baroque (15th-17th cs.)
