- Literary/folk character, most famously in Charles Perrault's tale; his story is often identified with Gilles de Rais (or Retz; d.1440), who allegedly murdered over 140 children, or with the 6th c. Breton chieftain Comorre (or Conomor, Conmore), who killed his infant son and tried to kill his wife, Tryphine
