New typography
Definition
- Jan Tschichold, in his book, Die neue Typographie (Berlin, 1928), proclaimed that typographic form, an expression of the new age of the machine, should be strictly functional. It must also be asymmetric, because symmetry involved putting words and sentences into shapes that were decorative and artificial and had nothing to do with their meaning and were therefore false. The typeface should be sanserif, which was seen at that time, particularly in Germany, as lettering in its purest form, shorn of inessentials [DA]
