Binary features for pharyngealization and length were added as these are phonemically contrastive in Arabic. (Saddiki, Wray & Li, 2024)
The pharyngealization on the voiceless bilabial stop causes this allophone to sound similar to the voiced bilabial stop [b] with which it can be confused by speakers of dialects which do not have the phoneme [p]. (Habash, Eryani, Khalifa, Rambow, Abdulrahim, Erdmann, Faraj, Zaghouani, Bouamor, Zalmout, Hassan, Al-Shargi, Alkhereyf, Abdulkareem, Eskander, Salameh & Saddiki, 2018)
The sibilant harmony can be seen in words where the causative prefix /s-/ is followed non-locally by another sibilant whereupon it takes that other sibilant's values for anteriority voicing and pharyngealization as shown by the data in (1) from Heath (2005 p. 442). (Burness & McMullin, 2020)
This difficulty arises because many Arabic phones are distinguished from each other only by phonetic features that often do not exist in the learner's native language such as pharyngealization. (Zhang, Habash & Toussaint, 2017)
