  • According to Ariel's accessibility theory (Ariel 1990) demonstrative NPs are more accessible than definite or indefinite articles so we replace the demonstrative determiner by a definite one in order to have a less accessible referring expression. (Todirascu, Wilkens, Rolin, François, Bernhard & Gala, 2022)
  • For instance articles demonstrative determiners and general determiners are all represented by the DT (determiner) tag in the Penn Treebank tagset but CLAWS5 tagset has separate tags for these. (Khullar, Majmundar & Shrivastava, 2020)
  • In Japanese referring expressions used for first mention are mainly bare NPs and only a small number of demonstrative determiner with nouns while there are four types of referring expressions which are used in subsequent mentions that includes two types that are never used in first mentions these being demonstrative pronouns and zero pronouns.
